Good morning to all my reading friends. This is the time of year allot of us are busy busy with gardening, planning vacations and picnics, and more. I have been working in my garden when I can, a little spinning, and lots of reading in the evenings.
My little veggie garden is looking pretty nice, especially with the lack of rain. This is the 3rd or 4th year now-I should look that up--of adding lots of compost and garden soil to make soil. We have no top soil what so ever here-just rock and very hard clay.
My potatoes are looking fantastic and do to the cooler temps my broccoli-cabbage-cauliflower plants are looking really good too as is my row of pea pods. This year I bought a different pea pod-it has gorgeous purple flowers and the pea pods are purple too-so pretty.
That difficult area in the back and one side of my veggie garden is beginning to take shape as well-it's been a battle getting rid of grasses and weeds, and amending this to soil as well. I did plant a couple herbs there along with wildflowers-hoping the rain we are suppose to get this week will help things start growing there. My trumpet vine plants I got from a friend last year are growing like crazy and making more plants as well-Hoping too they will start blooming those gorgeous orange trumpet shaped flowers. The hummingbirds will love those.
Before my gluten free days I always made all of our breads-and I really enjoyed making all different types, especially sourdough. So last week I worked on making a gluten free sourdough starter using whole grains mostly-teff flour, brown rice flour, sweet white rice flour, and ground golden flaxseed and used a gluten free dry sourdough starter I found at King Arthur Flour.
My first attempt at baking was so so-a challenge to get breads lighter than a brick, and healthier too. I won't give up so still working on that. I have dry starter left so I may make another batch from just brown rice flour and see what happens with that.
Since there has been nothing on tv really that I care to watch in the evenings except for The Voice which ends tonight I have been reading more novels.
In one of my author groups on fb I asked if anyone had recommendations while waiting for our favorite authors to release new books. One person suggested The Brooch series by Katherine Logan Wow I am in love with these books she has 5 out so far, so began reading from the first one. These are historical time travel romance books-but she doesn't overdo the romance scenes-some books I have read are just too much for me on that and not enough plot to the stories.
Her books are long too and with substance which I love-so I am hooked. The problem for me is I start reading after supper and can not put the book down til I get to the end-which has been 2 or 3am in the morning lol I will definately need to re read these for sure to make sure I caught everything. When a book is so good no matter how tired I am I have to keep reading--do you do that??
In the past when I read in book form I would always read the end if I couldn't wait-I don't do that anymore on the kindle.
So how have you all been?? Any plans for Memorial Day weekend?? We usually don't celebrate with picnics etc on this day but rather reflect on our nations heroes. If a nice day I do like to grill just don't make a party out of it
